How To Register For Your National Identification Number (NIN) And Card

The National Identification Number (NIN) is a set of numbers assigned to an individual upon successful enrollment. Enrollment consists of the recording of an individual’s demographic data and capture of the ten (10) fingerprints, head-to-shoulder facial picture and digital signature, which are all used to cross-check existing data in the National Identity Database to confirm that there is no previous entry of the same data. Once this (DE-duplication) process is completed the data is then stored with a unique NIN that was assigned to it.
The NIN once issued to a person cannot be used again, (that is, it cannot be issued to another person even if the previous person is dead). It is the NIN that helps to tie all records about a person in the database and is used to check the identity verified.

Every citizen from the age of 16 years and above and legal residents are eligible to enrol for the NIN. (Arrangements are currently being made to ensure that all persons from birth can be registered and enrolment of biometrics from the age of five (5) can be achieved).

I complete my mine at their Ikeja office (opposite Alausa) today in less than 30minutes after doing the online pre-registration. I know many people have not done theirs. As a result I decided to write this hitch free step by step guide on how to get the number and card. You’ll not be given the card instantly though. Below are the steps:

1. Click www.ninenrol.gov.ng to be welcomed to the National Identification Number (NIN) pre-registration portal

2. Create your National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment profile on the pre-registration portal www.ninenrol.gov.ng

3. Sign into the National Identification Number (NIN) pre-registration portal www.ninenrol.gov.ng and fill in biodata

4. Print out the pre-registration slip gotten from www.ninenrol.gov.ng and take it to the nearest enrolment Centre.

5. At the enrolment Centre, the enrolment officer scans barcode to pull up the applicant data.

6. Applicant verifies his/her data and has his/her photograph, finger print captured

7. Applicant has his supporting documents scanned

8.Enrolment is acknowledged and a slip is generated and given indicating completion of enrollment

I’m amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I come across a blog that’s equally educative and engaging, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. The issue is an issue that too few people are speaking intelligently about. Now i’m very happy that I found this during my hunt for something regarding this.

Good evening Mr. Elvis. I have not done my registration till now and that’s because I have had no knowledge of it till now. Please sir, when is the closure date for the registration? I stay at Coker, Surulere L.G.A to be precise, how can I locate Plot 1, Obafemi Awolowo Way, Opposite Alausa
Secretariat, Ikeja – Lagos and register my National I.D card? Thank you very much sir as I look forward to hear from you sir.

    • Elvis Boniface

Hello Onyekwe Peter, you don’t really need to go to the Alausa office as many offices have been opened in various local government. Though I don’t know of anyone in particular in Surulere, they is one at UNILAG in Akoka.

If you choose to go to the Alausa, board a bus from Ojuelegba to Ikeja last bus-stop, from there join another one to Alausa Secretariat, you’ll be alighted right in front of the address above.

  23. Oluwatosin

Hello, Please I have a question, I want to know if National Identification Number (NIN) is the same with the numbers on the National I’d card. If no.
Please sir, how can I get this National Identification Number, please I need a reply as soon as possible.

    • Elvis Boniface

Oluwatosin, The new NIN is a National Identity Management System that is replacing the National ID card. Later in the year, NIN will invalidate the old National ID card.

To register; you can do it yourself or go to the nearest registration centre to you. However, I’d advised you do your registration online and then go to any close centre for thumbprint and passport. It saves time.

To do that and and get information oof the centres, visit http://www.nimc.gov.ng.

      Cheers,
      ~ Elvis
