Meet UNILAG Students’ Leaders for 2013/2014 Academic Session

27th February, 2014 was the date. By 9:45am students started arriving at the Multipurpose Hall A, the venue of the swearing in ceremony of the elected students of the various faculties in the main campus and the school of Medicine. Elections had been conducted earlier and all discrepancies treated by the electoral tribunal set up by the office of the Dean of Students Affairs, DSA before the swearing in.

While waiting for the top officers of the university’s management, a handful of students including an outgoing president, Mohammed Thompson, MSA immediate president volunteered their comedy ingenuity to ensure the hall was not boring.

A few minutes to noon, top management officers of the university arrived. The event proper started at noon with the rendition of the National Anthem. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor R. A. Bellow was represented by the DVC (Management services) professor Duro Oni, the school Registrar, Dr (Mrs.) Taiwo Folashade Ipaye was represented by the deputy Registrar (Information), Mr Seth Dare. In attendance also were University Liberian, Dr. (Mrs.) Olukemi Adebimpe Fadehan, Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Olukayode Amund, University counsellor, Mrs. Asiwaju, sub-deans, staff advisers, staff of the legal unit and former presidents.

At about 2:00pm, a member of the legal unit with the assistance of two students representing Islam and Christianity respectively anchored the formal taking of oath by the elected students. Thereafter, certificates of return were issued to the faculty presidents and president of the distance learning institute, DLI.

In bask of euphoria, pleasantries were exchange, pictures taken and the ‘sure item seven’ that UNILAG is reputed for was not left out.

I did a full report for a National tabloid. How would I forget my dear friends in this blog. Below you’ll meet all the faculty presidents and their full details. Are you a UNILAG students or prospecting? Good news is; you can call these guys anytime you wish. I bring to you their phone numbers with their approval. It is an all-people administration (not the Nigeria way sha), there all said. I also ask them to tell their students their administration focus in one sentence. Enjoy reading.

It’s a good one that history is been written again in the pages of administration of each faculty, but it’s still to note that after each faculty post/position have been voted for and elected into this offices, this individuals in these posts are in no way made to feel that they would still be questioned by the students they govern due to the concious ‘negligence’ from the DSA’s office to make sure a HOUSE OF PARLIAMENT,is in place as a means of checks and balance for each individual’s administration/position in the student’s faculty association. Should we as student’s who pay earned fees as ‘Faculty dues’ and let many things be ‘swept under the carpet’ because of the consistent and concious negligence from the DSA’s office? And we all as citizen’s of our beloved country nigeria would also castigate at the government of the day that they are ‘individuals in political posts’ who don’t want to own up to responsibilities or also give account on how ‘tax payers’ money are being spent?
A great nation starts from the amount of ‘accountability’ an individual in ‘political positions’ is ready to make available to the desires of the people he governs; this also implies the ‘swept under the carpet’ situation for each FACULTIES HOUSE OF PARLIAMENT! Great Unilag student you, him, she, her…course mates, from 200Level to the final year both in idi-araba and Akoka should realise that ‘accountability’ in governance is a necessity to the growth of each sworn in administration, and you,yes you reading this post/comment are part of it. The House of Parliament in each faculty is your’s for the taken, let’s stand and demand for it back from the office of the DSA!
