Sad: UNIBEN Lecturer Shot Dead By Armed Robbers

The academic community of the University of Benin (UNBEN) was on Wednesday, thrown into mourning after suspected armed robbers killed a lecturer with the Department of Education, Dr. Godwin Omofonwa.

It was gathered that the robbers stormed Dr. Omofonwa’s residence located in Evbuomore quarters, in the early hours of Wednesday, shot him and dispossessed him and others of their belongings.

Briefing journalists, the state Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Johnson Kokumo, said, one of the robbers was killed during a gun battle with the police while five others escaped.

“Sadly, Dr. Godwin O. Omofonwa, a lecturer in the Department of Education, University of Benin, died as a result of gunshot wounds he received from the robbers”  he said.

Three mobile phones belonging to Omofonwa and a Nokia phone belonging to one Precious were recovered from the deceased suspect.

Other items recovered from the robbers included a single-barrel gun, iron cutter, one live and 12 expended cartridges and a torch.

Kokumo disclosed that he police had been on the trail of the gang which had been troubling the vicinity.
