10 facts about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also known as the last man standing,is a leading figure in Nigerian politics, having successfully influenced the course which democracy has taken in that country. Through the years, he has built an enviable reputation as a seasoned politician and an accountable strategist in the political clime of Nigeria. Let’s have a perusal of some facts about PBAT.

1. Early Life and Education
Bola Ahmed Tinubu was born in Lagos, Nigeria, on March 29, 1952. He spent his childhood and early years in Lagos before moving to the United States for higher education. He first attended Richard J. Daley College in Chicago, Illinois, then continued to Chicago State University, graduating in Accounting in 1979. His academic background in accounting thus provided a solid basis for his future business and political careers.

2. Professional Career in Accounting
Before entering politics, Tinubu was a successful accountant and financial expert. In the United States, he had worked with such houses as Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, Haskins & Sells, and GTE Services Corporation. He returned to Nigeria and joined Mobil Oil Nigeria, rising to an executive position in the company. This experience in the corporate world equipped him with financial capabilities that later helped him enter politics.

3. Entry into Nigerian Politics
One can argue that Tinubu’s political sojourn began in 1992 when he was elected into the Nigerian Senate, representing Lagos West Constituency under the Social Democratic Party, SDP, in what was to be the Third Republic. He hardly had much time in the Senate with the military coup dissolving democratic institutions in 1993. But undeterred by that development, he remained active with the pro-democracy movement to make arguments for the restoration of civilian rule.

4. Role in Pro-Democracy Movement
Bola Tinubu was among the fronts in the struggle against the military regime in Nigeria. He was also a prominent member of the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO-a body visibly opposed to the military dictatorship that was headed by General Sani Abacha. Due to his involvement in pro-democratic activities, he was forced into a lengthy sojourn exile. Finally, with his struggles and those of other activists, democracy was restored to Nigeria in 1999.

5. Lagos State Governorship
In 1999, Bola Tinubu was elected into the Office of the Governor of Lagos State, a position in which he served two uninterrupted terms until 2007. His governorship is often credited with laying the foundation for the modernization and economic growth of Lagos. Some of the major reforms instituted by him in areas such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and public transport transformed Lagos into a major economic hub in Africa. His administration also put in much work in improving the state’s revenues through innovative taxation policies.

6. The Birth of the All Progressives Congress (APC)
Tinubu is one of the founding members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a political party formed in 2013 through the merger of several opposition parties. The formation of the APC was a strategic move aimed at challenging the dominance of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Overall, Tinubu’s influence and political thinking helped the party win the 2015 general elections, where Muhammadu Buhari was elected President-a first in Nigeria, where an opposition party would unseat a ruling party.

7. Influence in National Politics
Many would refer to him as the “Jagaban” or “Asiwaju”-two other ways of saying “leader.” Bola Tinubu most likely will go down in history as one of the two most powerful men in Nigerian politics. His hold on Lagos has catapulted him into being a national player. Once an ally of then-President Obasanjo, he has leveraged his coalition-building and kingmaker support to launch many of his mentees into office during local and national elections. Many refer to this network as the “Tinubu political machine.”

8. Controversies and Criticisms
Notwithstanding his achievements, there have not been controversies that have been thrown at him. He has always had to live with the charges of corruption, especially with his wealth and how he had managed the resources of Lagos State when he was governor. Critics also accused him of having a stranglehold on Lagos State and the APC. However, Tinubu has denied this hook, line, and sinker, and his supporters are quick to remind people that his achievements outweigh the criticisms.

9. Philanthropy and Social Contributions
Bola Tinubu is also noted for his philanthropy, where he has contributed to many social causes such as education, health, and poverty alleviation. Various scholarship programs exist that he has invented, besides medical assistance for causes, particularly in Lagos. His active involvement in social development drew respect and admiration from many Nigerians, further setting in concrete his legacy as a leader who truly cared about his people.

10. Presidential Ambitions
For quite some time now, there has been a lot of speculation regarding Tinubu’s ambition for the presidency of Nigeria. Without saying it, the nature and nuances of his political activities have signaled his intention to contest as one of the hopefuls for the topmost office in the land. Suffice it to say that if Tinubu does decide to run, his broad political experience, influence, and strategic acumen will make him a formidable contender within the nation’s political milieu.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a renowned politician in the nation who has left an indelible mark over years of practice. From the early days when he worked as an accountant to his later life, when he became a political strategist and mentor, Tinubu has charted the history of Nigerian politics. Though he remains a polarizing figure, with staunch supporters and ardent critics, his impact on the nation could never be gainsaid. It is all an interest: a gubernatorial experience, leadership of the opposition party, and now a presidential hopeful; Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s story symbolizes resilience, ambition, and strategic brilliance.
