A total of 119 students will graduate with First Class degrees at the 42nd convocation of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bashiru Garba, disclosed this at a press briefing on Monday at the Senate Chambers of the institution.
Garba said the First Class graduates were among 3,561 students to receive Bachelor’s degrees, while the university would also award 120 PhDs and 323 Master’s degrees.
He noted that this year’s convocation coincides with the golden jubilee anniversary of the university, which was established in 1975.
According to him, the golden jubilee activities, held from September 1 to 6, will feature cultural displays, public lectures, debates, medical outreach, project commissioning, sports, a chancellor’s dinner, and the convocation proper.
As part of the ceremony, the institution will confer honorary doctorates on Islamic scholar Sheikh Muhammad Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa and former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Faruku Yahaya (retd.).
It will also bestow Emeritus status on Prof. Dejo Abdulrahman.
“UDUS has grown from four faculties and fewer than 200 students at inception to 16 faculties, two schools, 98 departments and over 23,000 students, with 16 research centres tackling real-world challenges,” Garba said.
Garba also lauded the media for its role in nation-building and urged journalists to “help tell the great story of 50 years of excellence at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.”
