The Lagos State Government said it has constructed about 1,290 blocks of classrooms across the six education districts of the state in six years.
The government also noted it rehabilitated over 4,000 classrooms in both primary and secondary schools in the state within the period.
The Chairman of the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools, Hakeem Smith, made these known during a press briefing at Alausa, Ikeja on Tuesday.
He also announced that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu would soon flag off the unveiling of 16 blocks of classrooms in some of the public schools spread across the state.
Present at the briefing were the commissioners for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun.
Smith said, “Since the inauguration, SCRPS has been able to rehabilitate 386 blocks of classrooms in both primary and secondary schools in Lagos State. This rehabilitation work is spread across the six education districts in the state. About 1,290 classroom blocks have been constructed across the six education districts of the state, while a lot of work is currently ongoing.
“Our new construction projects are preceded with a good geo-technical soil investigation to ensure they are founded on the right strata. The designs are functional, well orientated to ensure adequate natural light penetration and ventilation and well finished to ensure durability with the choice of materials.
“The buildings are concrete framed structures, with vertical movement (staircase) at the ends. There is also the provision of adequate toilet facilities for students and teachers with water provision from public boreholes.”
Smith added that about 208,000 furniture pieces had been supplied to the schools.
“Principals and teachers’ furniture are usually supplied along with the student furniture. Though, a lot is still required as there are shortfalls in some schools. Be rest assured that this is being addressed continuously and hopefully get to a good balance soon.”
