The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially released the results of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which saw nearly two million Nigerian candidates sit for the nationwide test.

Despite the high number of candidates who registered and participated, only a fraction crossed the 200-mark, a benchmark that many aspirants associate with better chances of securing admission into competitive tertiary institutions. According to the statistics published by JAMB, out of 1,955,069 candidates who took the examination, over 1.5 million scored below 200, reflecting a challenging performance year for many students. Only 420,415 candidates managed to attain scores above 200, while less than 1% exceeded the 300 mark, typically regarded as an exceptional performance threshold.

Among the candidates were 40,247 underage students, permitted to participate due to their outstanding academic history. However, only 467 of them (1.16%) attained scores considered to reflect gifted ability, as defined by JAMB’s standards. Further evaluations are expected to follow in the next stages of their academic journey.

This year’s exam commenced on Thursday, April 24, and has drawn nationwide attention, not just because of its outcome but also due to ongoing discussions around the quality of education and systemic reforms in Nigeria’s academic landscape.
