A monotechnic, Oak Business School, , Lagos, has said practical education will give rise to more entrepreneurs in Nigeria.

Speaking during the first matriculation ceremony of the school, Rector, Dr Lance Elakama, emphasised that practical education would make graduates self-reliant and entrepreneurs, saying they would contribute positively to the growth of the country.

“High premium should be placed on providing students with practical education for self-reliance. Emphasis should be to impart skills that will make graduates employable or entrepreneurs that will contribute positively to the economic growth of the country.”

He said that OBS specialised primarily in five courses; Computer Science, Accountancy, Business Administration, Marketing, and Banking & Finance.

“We have an Entrepreneurship Centre, where our students are exposed to the nitty gritty of entrepreneurship before they graduate.

“We send them to our sister organisations such as Press Oak, Lasena Waters, and Oak Design among others for internship.

“My dear students, the best thing you can do for yourselves as a human being is to develop a reading habit; once you do it, you’re on the right path.

As a management, we will impart intellect, skills, experience, hard work, and integrity, also to achieve this, we have seasoned academicians and professionals in the five departments,” he added.

Guest speaker at the matric, Prof. Afeisimi Badaiki, in his lecture titled, ‘Sow To Repeat The Benefit Of Higher Education,’ enjoined the students to be loyal, and obey the rules and regulations of the institution.

He said, “Educational advancement to higher educational institutions is central to manpower development in any country that must have industrial and technological growth and development. Both high-level and middle-level manpower is required. Polytechnics and monotechnics are instrumental in providing both middle and high levels manpower.”

“The contents of your courses are very rich and those delivering them are also very competent, so take full advantage of it.

“The idea is for you to acquire vocational and practical training as against theoretical education which makes Monotechnic very unique because even while you’re in school, you put to practice what you learn.”

Prof. Mike Ikhariale while advising the students said, “The education you will receive here will transform you from the world of illiteracy to literacy. Do not disappoint yourself, your school, your parent, and Nigeria.”
