Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged the University of Ibadan to reclaim its stature as the intellectual powerhouse of Africa, marking the occasion with the unveiling of a monumental 75th-anniversary billboard beside the Senate Building.

Governor Makinde, impassioned by the institution’s historic prominence, called on the university’s management to initiate a comprehensive revitalization, assuring full government collaboration to restore its status as the continent’s intellectual epicenter.

Emphasising the university’s past glory, Makinde highlighted its global influence, asserting that ideas incubated within its walls had far-reaching impact, extending beyond Nigeria to resonate across the African continent.

He underscored the significant interactions that leaders from southern and eastern African nations had experienced with the University of Ibadan in the past.

Addressing a critical safety concern, the governor pledged government intervention by proposing the construction of a pedestrian bridge in front of the university’s main gate to prevent tragic incidents of students being struck by vehicles.

While acknowledging potential traffic disruptions during the construction phase, Makinde sought the understanding and cooperation of the university community.

During the event, Peter Olapegba, chairman of the anniversary committee, extended gratitude to Makinde for his unwavering support and commitment to the university’s progress, hailing him as a true partner in fostering its growth.

The governor’s positive and significant disposition towards the University of Ibadan was lauded, setting the stage for a renewed chapter in the institution’s legacy.
