In recent times, there’s been a shift towards a more scientific exploration of sports performance, physical fitness, and healthy living.

The introduction of Western literary education between 1842 and 1882 by missionaries lacked a standardized curriculum with no emphasis on physical training. Nigeria’s amalgamation in 1914 marked the formation of the nation, gaining independence in 1960 as a federation. The arrival of missionaries and colonial administrators introduced sports and games, primarily in schools, police, and the military, focusing on law enforcement officers’ physical fitness.The first physical education syllabus in Nigerian schools was implemented in 1918, with subsequent revisions in 1927 and 1933. The 1933 syllabus emphasized overall health benefits. In 1956, the first indigenous PE syllabus for primary schools was published, making PE compulsory in all primary schools.
