In a move to further honour and celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced an additional public holiday on Thursday, April 11, 2024.

This decision was communicated via a statement released by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Aishetu Ndayako, on Tuesday, through the ministry’s official social media account.

The statement emphasized that the holiday extension is in recognition of the significance of Eid-el-Fitr and as a gesture to the Muslim Ummah for their dedication throughout the holy month of Ramadan. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring a safe and prosperous Nigeria for all citizens.

The declaration of Thursday as an additional holiday comes after Saudi Arabia announced on Monday that the crescent moon of Shawwal had not been sighted, thus extending the fasting period into Tuesday. Saudi authorities confirmed that Eid-el-Fitr would officially commence on Wednesday, April 10, marking the start of the new Islamic month.

Earlier announcements by the Federal Government had already designated Tuesday and Wednesday, April 9 and 10, 2024, as public holidays in observance of Eid-el-Fitr.

With the latest inclusion of Thursday as a public holiday, Nigerians will have an extended period to celebrate and engage in festivities marking the end of Ramadan.

The decision to add another day to the holiday period reflects the government’s commitment to accommodating the religious and cultural practices of its diverse population. This gesture is expected to allow families and communities more time to come together, reflect on the month of fasting, and enjoy the spirit of Eid-el-Fitr.
