Can you tell Edugist a bit about your background? What inspired you to pursue your degree?

I am Aisha Ahmed Ketso, proudly from Ketso Community in Niger State. For me, the inspiration to pursue a degree stemmed from the desire for self-development. Education has always been a tool for empowerment, and I believed that acquiring a degree would equip me with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute meaningfully to society and enhance my personal growth.

What motivated you to aim for a first-class degree? Was it a goal from the beginning, or did it develop over time?

My motivation for achieving a first-class degree was deeply rooted in gratitude. I saw it as one of the best ways to say “thank you” to my parents and sponsors for their unwavering support and sacrifices. From the onset, this was a goal I set for myself. I believed that excelling academically would honor their efforts and validate the opportunities they provided for me.

Did you face any personal challenges while studying? How did you overcome them?

Yes, challenges were a natural part of my journey, as they are in life. I encountered various difficulties, but my response was always anchored in prayer. I trusted God to guide me through every situation, whether good or bad.

How did you structure your study routine to achieve consistent academic success?

Interestingly, I did not follow a strict study routine. Instead, I relied heavily on tutorials. Teaching others became a powerful tool for reinforcing my own understanding. The process of tutoring kept me on my toes, as it required me to conduct extensive research beyond what was taught in class. This approach not only enhanced my knowledge but also deepened my mastery of various topics, as one cannot effectively teach what one does not fully understand.

What study techniques or strategies worked best for you while studying?

One of the most effective techniques for me was writing. I found that putting my thoughts and notes on paper significantly improved my understanding and retention of information. Writing allowed me to process and internalize concepts better than simply reading or listening.

Were there any specific subjects or courses that you found particularly difficult? How did you tackle them?

Statistics posed a significant challenge for me during my first year. However, with the help of supportive coursemates who explained difficult concepts, I was able to overcome my struggles. Over time, Statistics became one of my favorite courses. Interestingly, I found that I required less effort to study for it compared to essay-based courses.

How did you prepare for exams and handle the pressure of deadlines and assessments?

My exam preparation strategy was centered on conducting thorough research to gain additional knowledge beyond classroom teachings. I aimed to understand subjects comprehensively rather than simply memorizing facts. Regarding deadlines, I ensured that I stayed ahead by completing tasks on time. This proactive approach helped me manage stress and maintain a steady pace.

What role did your lecturers and university resources (libraries, academic support, etc.) play in your success?

The contributions of my lecturers were indispensable. They not only imparted knowledge but also served as sources of inspiration and guidance. Without their relentless efforts, I would not have achieved my current success. I remain deeply grateful for their impact on my academic journey.

How did you manage to balance academics with social life and extracurricular activities?

Balancing academics with other aspects of life can be tricky, but I managed it by following my instincts. I studied when I felt the need to focus and socialized when it seemed appropriate. This flexible approach allowed me to prioritize my academics without neglecting my social connections or personal well-being.

How important was your peer group in your studies? Did you study with friends or prefer to work alone?

My peer group was incredibly important to my academic success. While I generally prefer studying alone for deeper focus, collaborating with like-minded peers brought immense benefits. We shared ideas, exchanged knowledge, and supported each other in areas of difficulty. This collective effort often led to improved understanding and motivation for all involved.

How did you stay motivated during low points, especially when things got tough?

My faith played a central role during difficult times. I prayed and reminded myself that God does not burden anyone beyond what they can bear. This belief gave me strength and perspective, helping me push through low moments with renewed determination.

How did achieving a first-class degree change your perception of yourself or your abilities?

Achieving a first-class degree did not change my perception of my abilities because I had always believed I could achieve it. Instead, it reaffirmed my confidence and validated the hard work I had invested throughout my academic journey.

If you could go back to your first year, what advice would you give to your younger self?

If I could revisit my first year, I would advise my younger self to always put God first in everything, trust the process, and follow my instincts. These principles would serve as a guide for overcoming challenges and making the most of every opportunity.

Now that you’ve graduated with a first-class degree, what are your plans for the future?

My plans are centered on continuous self-improvement beyond academics. I aim to explore opportunities that will help me grow personally and professionally while contributing to the development of education in my community and beyond.

Has your academic achievement shaped your career aspirations? Do you feel more doors have opened for you?

While my academic achievement has not altered my career aspirations, it has undoubtedly opened more doors for me. The recognition that comes with a first-class degree has created opportunities that I might not have accessed otherwise.

What career opportunities are you most excited about, and how do you plan on leveraging your degree?

I am passionate about improving education and making it accessible to all. Quality education is critical to development, and I aspire to play a role in its positive transformation within my state, Nigeria, and beyond. My degree is a stepping stone, and I intend to leverage it by seeking local and global opportunities to enhance my professional skills. Through education and continuous self-development, I believe I can contribute to achieving greatness in this field.
