The Akwa Ibom State Government has launched a new basic education reform initiative powered by artificial intelligence, aimed at strengthening literacy and numeracy skills among pupils in public primary schools.
In a statement released on Thursday, the government said the programme, being implemented in collaboration with EIDU and the State Ministry of Education, introduces a technology-driven approach to classroom teaching and learning.
EIDU, an international organisation focused on enhancing learning outcomes, provides a digital platform that supports teachers with structured lesson delivery while offering pupils customised and interactive learning experiences based on their individual progress. The system leverages human-centred AI tools to monitor performance and identify learning gaps in real time.
According to the statement, the initiative will be introduced in phases, with the first stage targeting about 6,000 pupils across 67 schools during the 2025/2026 academic session. It is designed to integrate digital tools into classroom instruction while equipping teachers, school administrators and education managers with live data to track progress and improve learning outcomes.

The State Commissioner for Education, Ubong Essien Umoh, said the programme aligns with the government’s ARISE Agenda, which prioritises improvements in education quality across the state.
He noted that the initiative reflects the commitment of Governor Umo Bassey Eno to advancing learning outcomes and modernising the education system.
EIDU currently works with more than 40 governments across four countries, reaching over 790,000 learners through its AI-supported teaching model, which focuses on building strong foundational skills.
Officials described the programme as a significant step towards embedding technology in classroom learning in Akwa Ibom, providing both teachers and pupils with modern tools to enhance teaching effectiveness and academic performance.
