ABU professor returns N1.1m mistakenly paid by NDA

In an inspiring demonstration of honesty and integrity, Professor Umar Ka’oje of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria has voluntarily returned N1,153,953.36 to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) after it was mistakenly deposited into his bank account.

The story began with the expiration of Ka’oje’s teaching contract with the military academy, leading to a financial transaction error that deposited the substantial sum into his account.

Rather than keeping the money, the ABU professor chose to uphold the highest ethical standards.

Maj.-Gen. John-Ochefu Ochai, the Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, visited ABU on Wednesday to commend Professor Ka’oje for his extraordinary display of integrity.

This commendation came in addition to a heartfelt letter of appreciation from the NDA, dated September 11.

Rahanatu Lawal, the head of the Department of Political Science and International Studies at ABU, warmly received the mommandant during his visit.

Lawal expressed admiration for Ka’oje’s moral courage and emphasised the importance of such exemplary character in today’s society.

The Commandant underscored the significance of recognising and rewarding honesty, stating that he was moved to follow up on the letter of commendation with a personal visit.

He also pledged the NDA’s readiness to further honour Ka’oje at an appropriate time.
