24-year-old Jemima Shetima-Balami, a second-year Mass Communication student at Federal Polytechnic Mubi, Adamawa State, has taken her own life, allegedly in response to the termination of her relationship with a lecturer from Modibbo Adama University,Yola.

Jemima, on industrial attachment with Adamawa State Television, Yola, was found lifeless in her residence at Vinikilang, near ATV Yola, having consumed a substance suspected to be rat poison.

Hailing from Garkida town in the Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, she was the only daughter of her father, who had to inform the police of her tragic demise.
The incident, confirmed by the state’s Public Relations Officer, SP Yahaya Suleiman, unfolded as Jemima’s father reported the suicide. Suleiman acknowledged that a different narrative surfaced, linking Jemima’s demise to a tumultuous relationship with the alleged lecturer.

According to Suleiman, “The father of Jemima reported that she committed suicide by taking a deadly substance. Another version had it that she visited her boyfriend, a lecturer at Modibbo Adama University Yola, and was told to quit the relationship.

Angered by the news from her boyfriend, the deceased took poison. We are investigating the matter, and justice will be served.”
