Artificial Intelligence: US, EU, Britain to sign first international treaty

The US, EU, Britain are signing the first treaty on Artificial Intelligence today, Thursday, 5 September 2024. This is following the adoption of the AI Convention by 57 countries.

The AI Convention was adopted in May 2024. The Convention gestated with the draft of a negotiation text which had been in the works since 2019.

The treaty covers issues bothering on human rights, privacy, among others, while promoting responsible innovation.

While there remains to be seen how the development pans out in terms of execution, the treaty is a major conversation starter about legal frameworks on AI.
