ASUU Chair Demands N200m from AAU for Sexual Harassment Allegation

By Adekunle Peter, Benin
The suspended Chairman of Ambrose Alli University branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Monday Igbafen, has threatened to take legal action against the Edo State-owned institution if it fails to retract its “defamatory materials” within 30 days.

The AAU announced Igbafen’s suspension in its News Bulletins of February 13, 2019 over alleged gross misconduct bordering on sexual harassment and threats of sex-for-marks.

However, Igbafen denied the allegations, saying they were aimed at blackmailing and cowing him.

The lecturer is also demanding the sum of N200m as compensation for the injury he suffered because of the said offensive publication.

The associate professor in the Department of Philosophy in the university in a letter written to the school by his lawyers Osehon Irebhude & Co also demanded a written apology from the school.

The letter read in part, “The author of the write-up and the university knew that that allegation was unfounded but was only meant to spite our client and he has indeed been injured by the grave but untrue allegation contained in that offensive publication.

“Our client has been injured in his character, credit and reputation and has been exposed to odium, hatred and ridicule and has suffered damages.”
