The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is preparing for a nationwide strike that could once again cripple academic activities across Nigerian universities, citing neglect of lecturers’ welfare by the Federal Government.

A member of ASUU’s National Executive Committee (NEC), who also chairs a branch in the North West, said the union has run out of patience with the Bola Tinubu-led administration.

“We are still mobilising. We have given the government enough time. The National President will convene a NEC meeting at any moment from now to signal the way forward. But I can confirm that strike is on the table,”the union leader told our correspondent.

The planned strike revolves around long-standing grievances, including the non-implementation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, unresolved conditions of service, poor funding of universities, lack of autonomy, and threats to academic freedom.

ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, had earlier warned that the union would not hesitate to embark on industrial action if the government failed to meet its commitments.

The union is also pressing for the release of withheld salaries, improved working conditions, and sustainable funding for Nigeria’s public universities.

If ASUU proceeds with the strike, students across federal and state universities may once again face prolonged academic disruptions, a recurring challenge in the country’s higher education system.
