A final year student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Chisom Nwankwo, has lost her life in a fatal auto accident

According to a report on Tuesday, the incident occurred near the campus gate on road one around 12 noon, sending shockwaves through the university community.

Chisom Nwankwo, a dedicated student in the department of Agricultural Economics, was on her way towards the campus gate when the accident unfolded.

Eyewitnesses revealed that an initial accident involving a commercial motorcycle and a private car had occurred on the same road just moments before.

Usman Alli, an eyewitness, disclosed that the motorcyclist carrying Chisom became distracted by the initial accident. Attempting to overtake a commercial bus, the motorcyclist lost control, resulting in a fall along with the passenger, Chisom Nwankwo.

Tragically, a commercial bus following closely behind inadvertently ran over them, causing severe injuries.

The injured victims were promptly rushed to the university clinic and subsequently referred to the University Teaching Hospital.

Despite immediate medical attention, Chisom Nwankwo, a 500-level student, succumbed to her injuries.

The Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the heartbreaking news, stating that Chisom was declared dead shortly after admission to the teaching hospital.

According to Olarewaju, the sequence of events involved a collision between a commercial motorcycle with registration number EGA 602KG and a Toyota Corolla.

The impact caused the motorcyclist, Chisom’s rider, to lose control and collide with the bus trailing behind.

In response to the tragic incident, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, expressed deep sorrow and concern.

The university has informed the police, given the loss of life, and emphasizes the need for heightened caution among road users.

The body of the deceased is currently housed at the university’s campus preservation of anatomy, as the teaching hospital’s morgue has reportedly collapsed.

The university community extends heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Chisom Nwankwo, mourning the loss of a promising final year student.
