Casio partners SKLD to promote STEM education in Nigeria, launches Advanced Calculator

In a significant move aimed at revolutionizing STEM education in Nigeria, CASIO Middle East and Africa FZE unveiled the fx-9910NG PLUS 2nd Edition calculator, specially designed to cater to the needs of Nigerian students and educators following their patnership with SKLD Integrated Services.

This announcement came during the CASIO Education Conference 2024 held in Lagos, themed ‘Fostering Innovation and Problem-Solving in the Nigerian Classroom through the Use of Technology.’

The new calculator integrates basic calculation functionalities with advanced features such as differential calculation, integrations, complex numbers, and matrix and vector calculations, among others. This innovation is poised to enhance the learning experience in mathematics, science, and engineering disciplines across secondary schools in Nigeria.

Mr Takashi Seimiya, Managing Director of CASIO Middle East and Africa FZE, highlighted the company’s commitment to supporting Nigerian educators and students. He emphasized, “Following a successful training program for 1,200 teachers on the usage of calculators with Inquiry-Based Learning, we are thrilled to deepen our footprint in Nigeria with the fx-9910NG PLUS 2nd Edition calculator. This tool underscores our dedication to fostering a robust educational environment equipped with cutting-edge technology.”

During the conference, discussions were centred on leveraging technology to elevate learning outcomes in Nigerian schools. Mr. Tayo Osiyemi, Executive Director of SKLD Integrated Services Limited, moderated a panel session focusing on the integration of technology to enhance educational practices and societal impact.

Mrs Akinlade Olatomirin, Director of the Education Resource Centre at the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with CASIO. She remarked, “Our partnership with CASIO Middle East and Africa FZE has been transformative. The introduction of the fx-9910NG PLUS 2nd Edition calculator aligns perfectly with our goals of promoting inquiry-based learning and preparing students for future challenges.”

Highlighting the practical application of the new calculator, secondary school students participated in a Mathematical Quiz competition using the fx-9910NG PLUS 2nd Edition. The competition showcased the capabilities of the calculator to solve complex mathematical problems effectively.

The event culminated in an awards ceremony where Chineye Oforma, Bada AbdulSalam, and Lawal Ismail emerged as the top three winners of the Mathematical Quiz competition. They were awarded cash prizes of N100,000, N250,000, and N500,000 respectively, reinforcing the importance of STEM education and innovative learning tools in Nigeria.

Prominent figures from the Nigerian education sector attended the event, including Mr Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Lagos State, and representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC. Their presence underscored the collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors to enhance educational standards through technological advancement.
