College partners engineering council to combat quackery

In a bid to combat quackery in the engineering profession, the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has announced a partnership with the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology (FCFMT). The collaboration aims to ensure that all engineers at FCFMT are certified members of COREN.

During a courtesy visit to the FCFMT, Lagos, Tomide Akinnawo, a Senior Engineer and COREN representative, highlighted the importance of registering engineers as professionals to ensure that students are in safe hands. He also emphasized the need to curb quackery and fraudulent practices that have been hindering engineering practice in the society.

Chuks Onuoha, the Provost of the FCFMT, expressed the institute’s readiness to collaborate with COREN, as such partnerships lead to the development of the nation. He also requested assistance in registering their students as members of COREN at a subsidized fee.

In response, the Chairman of the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE), Lagos chapter, Kayode Ibidapo, affirmed COREN’s willingness to expose the students to more beneficial workshops and training in the engineering profession.

COREN is the regulatory body that governs the practice of engineering in Nigeria, while FCFMT is a monotechnic approved by the National Board for Technical Education. The college offers courses in Fisheries Technology, General Science, Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, and Maritime Transport.
