#Did you know: The world’s first University was founded in Africa by a woman

Fatima al-Fihri, also known as Fatima bint Muhammad Al-Fihriya Al-Qurashiya, was a pioneering woman who founded the University of Al Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco, in 895 CE. Born into a wealthy and educated family, Fatima and her sister inherited their father’s fortune. Devoted to promoting knowledge and education, Fatima used her share of the inheritance to establish the university.

Originally founded as a mosque, the University of Al Qarawiyyin gradually evolved into an influential center for learning, covering a wide range of subjects. It became a hub for scholars and intellectuals, contributing significantly to the preservation and advancement of knowledge.

Fatima al-Fihri’s legacy extends beyond the establishment of the university. Her vision and philanthropy have left an enduring mark on history, making her a symbol of empowerment and education, particularly for women. The University of Al Qarawiyyin continues to operate today, exemplifying Fatima’s enduring impact on the world of education.

Originally established as a mosque, the University of Al Qarawiyyin evolved over the centuries into a prestigious center for learning. Fatima al-Fihri, drawing from her inheritance, dedicated her wealth to creating a place where knowledge could flourish. The institution’s diverse curriculum encompassed Islamic studies, Arabic grammar, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, and more.

Architecturally, the university is a masterpiece, blending Islamic and Andalusian styles. Its structures include a prayer hall, a courtyard, and various rooms for educational purposes.
