Dr. Azeez Butali, Professor of Oral Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, has been awarded the prestigious Honoris Causa by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
The College’s Senate officially announced the recognition following its meeting on June 3, 2025.
“It feels good to be honored by the highest postgraduate medical college in Nigeria. I am very grateful to my colleagues for finding me worthy,” said Dr. Butali. “This recognition is definitely a motivation for me to continue my discovery and translational work to prevent orofacial clefts and improve clinical, mental, and social outcomes in families with orofacial clefts in Africa and around the world.”
The Honoris Causa Award is reserved for outstanding medical specialists who have demonstrated exceptional excellence in clinical practice and training, with notable national and international impact. Significantly, the award is bestowed on distinguished individuals who are not Fellows of the College, underscoring both its exclusivity and the magnitude of the honor.
Dr. Butali will formally receive the award at the 19th Annual Scientific Conference and All Fellows Congress (ASCAF), slated for August 4–8, 2025, at the International Conference Centre in Sokoto State, Nigeria.
