Edugist, a leading education-focused media platform, has participated in a three-day capacity-building workshop on Media and Information Literacy (MIL), jointly organized by UNESCO and the Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) Foundation.
The workshop brought together media practitioners, educators, and civil society actors to strengthen knowledge and practical skills in navigating today’s complex information environment.
The event opened with a detailed overview of Media and Information Literacy by Yachat Nuhu, Head of Office in the Communication and Information Sector at UNESCO. She emphasized the critical role of MIL in combating disinformation, promoting informed civic engagement, and advancing UNESCO’s global media literacy agenda.
Dr. Chido Onumah, Co-founder of the MILID Foundation, spoke on “Media and Information Literacy and Democracy,” stressing how critical thinking and access to credible information empower citizens to participate meaningfully in democratic processes and hold institutions accountable.
Also speaking was Professor Suraj Olunifesi of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos, who examined the connection between MIL and conflict. He illustrated how media misinformation can fuel violence and how MIL strategies can be harnessed for peacebuilding and social cohesion.
The workshop also featured sessions on the intersection of MIL and gender-based violence (GBV), ethical content creation in a digital age, and hands-on training on verification tools for fact-checking. These sessions aimed to equip participants with the tools to detect false information and produce credible content.
Edugist’s involvement in the training highlights its ongoing commitment to ethical journalism, digital media education, and supporting initiatives that foster media literacy across Nigeria and beyond.
