EFCC nabs 33 in major student-led internet fraud bust in Akure

The Benin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) apprehended fourteen undergraduates from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, alongside nineteen others on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.

The arrests, executed in the early hours of the day, targeted various residential locations within the Akure metropolis based on intelligence gathered regarding the alleged involvement of the suspects in internet-related crimes.

The operation was triggered by urgent pleas from concerned parents and neighbors, urging the EFCC to intervene and safeguard their children from falling victim to the illicit activities of the apprehended individuals.

During the sting operation, the EFCC seized a total of ten exotic cars, numerous mobile phones, laptops, and one motorbike from the suspects’ possession. The recovery of these items underscores the scale and sophistication of the suspected fraudulent activities.

The suspects, now in EFCC custody, are awaiting the conclusion of investigations before facing charges in court. The case is poised to shed light on the extent of internet-related crimes perpetrated by students, raising concerns about the involvement of academic institutions in such illicit activities.

The EFCC remains committed to curbing cybercrime and will continue to collaborate with communities to tackle this growing menace.
