Alleged operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has conducted a late-night operation at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, in Ondo State.
According to accounts circulating on social media, some students have come forward, sharing videos and alleging that the operation involved forced entry into rooms and subsequent arrests. Visual evidence shared online depicts broken window frames, indicating attempted unauthorized access.
Expressing concern, a social media user identified as J Brandy remarked, “I thought they said EFCC should not raid at nights again. This hostel (Celebrity Lodge, FUTA) is right behind mine. When will this endemic? EFCC (officials) moving like thieves at night!”
Footage circulating online also captured an individual donning attire resembling that of EFCC personnel. This incident comes in the wake of EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede’s directive issued in November, which ordered the cessation of nocturnal sting operations. This directive followed the controversial arrest of suspected internet fraudsters in Ile-Ife, Osun State, by EFCC operatives, sparking nationwide condemnation.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the EFCC regarding the reported raid at FUTA were met with initial assurance to call back in 20 minutes. However, subsequent attempts to reach the agency’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, for comment have been unsuccessful at the time of this publication.
