The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has called on Nigerian students to shun internet fraud and instead channel their digital skills toward innovation, national growth, and economic development.
This message was delivered during an interactive session held on Friday, June 20, 2025, at the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the EFCC. The event featured students from the Department of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, who were on an educational visit to learn about the Commission’s work and mandate.
Addressing the students, the Zonal Director, CE Michael Nzekwe, represented by Deputy Commander of the EFCC and Head of the Public Affairs Directorate, DCE Ayo Oyewole, charged young people to embrace creativity and avoid using the internet for fraudulent activities.
“As youths, you must begin to look inward and challenge your creative abilities to bring up ideas, perspectives and drives that can grow the economy,” Oyewole said. He encouraged the students to see themselves as nation builders and to support the Commission’s efforts in the fight against corruption and cybercrime.
The session focused on how students and young professionals can play active roles in curbing financial crimes by being change agents within their communities.
Dr. Ibukun David, a lecturer from OAU who led the delegation, thanked the EFCC for the warm reception and informative engagement. He noted that the session had broadened the students’ understanding of the Commission’s work and inspired them to become advocates for integrity.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to engage with the EFCC and will ensure that our students continue to share what they’ve learned with others at every opportunity,” he said.
