The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Ekiti State Chapter, Sola Adigun, has been elected as the National President of the body.
Also among elected officials into the ASUSS National Administrative Council are Sule Abasu as National Deputy President and Ken Chukwudi Okoh as the Secretary General.
A statement from the Secretary General, Chukwudi, made available in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State on Wednesday stated that “the new leadership emerged through unanimous decision of the National Delegates Conference of ASUSS” which held in Abuja.
According to him, the new National President, Adigun, shortly after his inauguration on Tuesday, vowed to strive to ensure improvement in the quality of secondary education in the country.
Adigun expressed ASUSS’ readiness to work with federal and state governments towards “ensuring that the quality of secondary education in Nigeria meets the global standard.
“We also urge governments to renew commitment to funding of secondary education in Nigeria through improved infrastructure and manpower development in the sector”.
Adigun challenged secondary schools teachers in Nigeria “to exercise their freedom of association by supporting ASUSS for the protection of rights which are peculiar to the secondary school sector”
The ASUSS National President charged members of the union to shun conducts that could divide their ranks, saying, “This is ASUSS—the hope of the Nigerian teaching profession. We must not import into our union the divisiveness and politics that have weakened our nation.
“It is time for every state chapter to show absolute loyalty and unwavering commitment to the national body. A weak national leadership is a reflection of weak grassroots commitment. Our strength must be collective,” Adigun said.
His predecessor, Sam Omaji, expressed delight over the mature conduct of the delegates which produced the new leadership in an atmosphere devoid of rancour and acrimony.
Omaji said, “I am happy that the new leadership under Comrade Sola Adigun is made up of quality members who have been part of the trajectory of our union in the last 20 years.
“I have no doubt in my mind therefore that our union would be strengthened, refocused and achieve that which we have worked for. I therefore charge the new leadership to remain undaunted and resilient in providing quality leadership for secondary teachers in Nigeria,” the immediate past ASUSS National President said.
