The Ekiti State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) has dismissed a secondary school teacher, Mr. Owoosi Gbenga, for allegedly impregnating a 17-year-old SS3 student preparing for the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination.
The teacher, who was found guilty of serious misconduct and criminal offense, had been teaching Economics at Alarelu Comprehensive High School, Igbara Odo-Ekiti.
According to the TESCOM Disciplinary Committee’s findings, Mr. Owoosi had a history of bad behavior, including collaborating with students to steal laptop computers belonging to the school. The Committee’s investigation revealed that Mr. Owoosi’s actions were not only unethical but also criminal.
Hon. Babatunde Abegunde, Chairman of the Ekiti State Teaching Service Commission, emphasized that the Commission followed due process before dismissing the teacher. He stated that the decision serves as a deterrent to others who might engage in similar behaviour, adding that “dismissal of Owoosi will serve as a deterrent to others who might want to indulge in such heinous act”
The Disciplinary Committee also recommended that all teachers be sensitized on the Gender-Based Violence Prohibition Law 2019 and other related issues. Additionally, the Committee suggested that schools be closely monitored to uphold moral norms and ethical standards.
This incident highlights the importance of maintaining high standards of behavior within the education sector. The Ekiti State Teaching Service Commission’s swift action in dismissing the teacher sends a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
