Fact Check: Are WAEC examination fees increasing dramatically?

Rumours have been circulating claiming that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is significantly increasing examination fees, and this has caused concern among parents and guardians. However, upon closer examination, it appears that these claims are not accurate.

The recent message circulating among parents and guardians suggesting a dramatic increase in WAEC examination fees is not supported by credible information. WAEC, as of the time of filing this report, had debunked this claim through an announcement made via their Twitter handle.

To ensure the accuracy of this information, we reached out to a WAEC official for clarification.

In response, the WAEC official who doesn’t want name mentioned stated clearly that the circulation is fake and misleading. He referred us to a link and from the link we discovered that the information is fake.

However, WAEC emphasized that it is committed to providing affordable examination services to students within the West African sub-region. Any changes in examination fees, if and when they occur, are typically communicated through official channels, such as the WAEC website or official press releases.

Furthermore, WAEC clarified that the document in question did not originate from WAEC Nigeria. The Council also stated that it does not entertain requests for the amendment of dates of birth.

Parents, guardians, and students need to rely on credible sources and official announcements for information about examination fees and related matters. Spreading unverified information can cause unnecessary panic and confusion.

Claim: WAEC is dramatically increasing examination fees.

Fact: False

In conclusion, the claim that WAEC is dramatically increasing examination fees is false, according to WAEC’s official statement. Parents and guardians should remain vigilant and verify information from reliable sources to ensure they have accurate and up-to-date information about examination-related matters.
