Nigeria’s higher education landscape continues to expand to meet the demands of its youthful population. One of the institutions established to help decentralise access to tertiary education is the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK). Strategically located in the North-Western state of Kebbi, FUBK is not just a centre of learning but also a symbol of federal commitment to equitable educational development. Whether you’re a prospective student, academic researcher, parent, or policymaker, here’s what you should know about Federal University Birnin Kebbi:
1. FUBK was one of nine federal universities established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2013 during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
2. The creation of these universities was aimed at expanding access to quality tertiary education, particularly in states that previously had no federal university. FUBK, therefore, serves as the federal institution in Kebbi State and is located in the state capital, Birnin Kebbi.
3. The university’s mission is anchored on producing graduates who are globally competitive, research-oriented, and socially responsible. FUBK aims to be a world-class institution, fostering excellence in teaching, research, and community service.
4. FUBK began operations with three faculties: the Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences; the Faculty of Science; and the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. Over time, the university has expanded to include more programmes and departments.
5. The institution now offers over 30 undergraduate degree programmes across these faculties, with future plans to expand to postgraduate studies.
6. As with all federal universities in Nigeria, admission into FUBK is competitive and is handled through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Prospective students must register and sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), meet the institution’s cut-off marks, and participate in the Post-UTME screening exercise.
7. Though a relatively new institution, FUBK has made significant progress in developing its infrastructure. The university operates from two campuses: the take-off campus located along Kalgo Road and the permanent site at Unguwar Jeji. The permanent site is gradually being developed and houses some faculties, administrative buildings, and student hostels.
8. The university has laboratories, a central library, lecture theatres, and ICT centres to support teaching and research.
9. Academic activities began in November 2014, for the 2014/2015 academic session with a students’ population of 507 and academic staff strength of 102.
10. The University has six (6) directorates which include, Academic Planning, Physical Planning, Research and Innovation, ICT Directorate, Entrepreneurship and CSBE Directorate.
