Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has approved October 11 for the reopening of Unity Schools across the country.

This was contained in a statement issued by the minister on Wednesday in Lagos.

While disclosing this, Adamu said the approval was for students in Junior Secondary School and Senior Secondary School.

He said the action was to enable students who have been at home since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic to complete their academic session, which would end in December.

The minister advised that COVID-19 protocols should be strictly observed in the schools to prevent its spread among students.

“However, schools that have not concluded their 2nd term examination should round off and commence 3rd term immediately, which is expected to end in December,” he said.

Kwara State Communications Commissioner Harret Afolabi-Oshatimehin, in a statement, said, “With various training held for teachers on how to protect themselves and students from the COVID-19 infection, improved manpower in monitoring and case tracings, and appreciable guarantee of some protection for the children, the government hereby directs the reopening of elementary schools from October 5.

”Similarly, state-owned tertiary institutions are to reopen from October 12 or as may be determined by their respective governance structures.

”COVID-19 is still with us. The government, therefore, urges school authorities to ensure that all safety protocols are adhered to, including physical distance, use of face masks, and constant washing of hands with soap and water, in order to flatten the curve of transmission of the virus,” he added.
