The Federal Government has officially converted the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Akure (UNIMEDTH) to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Akure, Ondo State.
The conversion was finalised during an unveiling and handover event, which also featured the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Federal Government and the Ondo State Government. The ceremony was witnessed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Prof. Pate described the development as a major step toward improving healthcare delivery and expanding access to advanced medical services across the country. He commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the Ondo State Government for their cooperation and support in facilitating a smooth transition.
He noted that the establishment of the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Akure, aligns with President Tinubu’s renewed commitment to strengthening the healthcare system, medical education, research capacity, and specialist services nationwide.
The Deji of Akure, His Royal Majesty, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, applauded the President for fulfilling his promise to upgrade the facility. He expressed optimism that the new status would enhance healthcare delivery and promote socioeconomic development in the state capital.
In recognition of his contributions to the health sector and the transformation in Akure, Prof. Pate was bestowed with the chieftaincy title “Okoredeola of Akure Kingdom” by the monarch.
