The Federal Government has unveiled a new curriculum framework for basic, senior secondary, and technical schools. The initiative aims to cut down on subject overload and improve the quality of learning nationwide.
The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad, on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, during the official presentation in Abuja.
Prof. Ahmad explained that the curriculum review was conducted in collaboration with key agencies including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
“The new structure ensures a balance between subject offerings and practical, in-depth learning. The reforms were designed to reduce content overload, give students more time to learn, and align education with contemporary global realities,” she said.
Breakdown of the New Curriculum
Primary Schools (P1–3): 9–10 subjects
Primary Schools (P4–6): 10–12 subjects
Junior Secondary Schools: 12–14 subjects
Senior Secondary Schools: 8–9 subjects
Technical Schools: 9–11 subjects
According to the ministry, this realignment will not only ease the pressure on students but also enhance practical and technical skills development.
Prof. Ahmad assured that the ministry will enforce strict monitoring to ensure smooth adoption across schools. She commended stakeholders for their role in shaping the reforms and promised that the Federal Government remains committed to education as a tool for national development.
