The Federal Ministry of Education has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for renaming the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, after the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

The institution will now be known as Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri.

The announcement was made during a special session of the expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) held on July 17, 2025.

The session, convened by President Tinubu, was dedicated to honouring the legacy of the late Nigerian leader.

President Tinubu opened the session with a moving tribute, recalling Buhari’s unwavering dedication to national security, institutional reform, economic recovery, and anti-corruption efforts.

In attendance were top national leaders, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, governors, ministers, and the Head of Service.

The late President’s son, Yusuf Buhari, responded on behalf of the family, expressing gratitude for the honour.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, CON, speaking on behalf of the Ministry and the Nigerian education sector, expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu.

He described the renaming as a “statesmanlike decision” and emphasized its significance to the sector.

“President Tinubu’s decision reflects not only deep empathy and respect but also a firm belief in education as the bedrock of national development. His commitment to human capital development is unwavering and consistent with the path of national renewal that President Buhari championed,” Dr. Alausa stated.

He further highlighted that the gesture is a powerful affirmation of the pivotal role of education in shaping Nigeria’s future and sustaining its legacy of leadership.

The Buhari administration (2015–2023) was noted for key national initiatives including the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, Treasury Single Account (TSA), Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), and various social investment schemes.

The ministry reaffirmed its dedication to promoting the values of service, integrity, and excellence — ideals upheld by both President Tinubu and the late President Buhari.
