The Federal Government on Monday unveiled a digital portal designed to provide a credible database of Nigerian teachers, streamline licensing, and promote professionalism in the teaching sector.

The portal was launched in Abuja by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria in partnership with the United Kingdom–funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria programme.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, said the initiative marked a new chapter for teacher management in the country.

“Today, we are not merely unveiling a portal, we are opening a new chapter – a chapter where technology, innovation, and efficiency become the heartbeat of teacher professionalism in our country,” Ahmad said

“In an increasingly digital world, where knowledge travels at the speed of light and nations are competing through ideas, skills and creativity, Nigeria cannot afford to remain behind. To build the future we dream of, we must embrace the tools of the 21st century,” she added.

Also speaking, Senior Education Adviser at the British High Commission, Ian Attfield, said the UK government was delighted to support the project, stressing that teachers must be adequately trained and motivated.

“There are lots of different types of teachers; community teachers, volunteers in faith-based education, and those in low-cost private schools. Many of them are under or unqualified.

The diversity means that these systems need to be integrated, they need to be smart, but they also need to be motivated,” Attfield said.

He assured that the UK government, through its Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, would continue to support Nigeria’s education reforms.
