First Lady urges national drive for more school teachers

First Lady Mrs Remi Tinubu has thrown her support behind the initiative of the federal ministry of education initiative to recruit more teachers for government schools nationwide.

Her endorsement came during a visit by the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, and his team to her office at the State House in Abuja yesterday.

Tinubu, herself a former educator, emphasized the critical role teachers play in enhancing the quality of education.

“I will join you to champion the drive for more teachers in the country. They are essential to improving our teaching outcomes,” she affirmed, as reported by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi.

The first lady also commended the minister’s decision to rename the Second Chance School to the Alternative High School for Girls, noting that the change was more dignifying and would encourage more girls to pursue education despite prevailing challenges such as insecurity.

“Education is pivotal for national growth. Despite the challenges we face, including insecurity discouraging girl child education, we remain resolute in providing quality education to this generation,” Senator Tinubu remarked, urging governors to adopt similar initiatives across states.

She highlighted the importance of adult literacy schools and advocated for the reintroduction of technical colleges to cater to students who may not excel academically in traditional settings.

In response, Minister Mamman outlined the ministry’s strategy, which includes integrating skills acquisition programs from primary school level and addressing the issue of out-of-school children.

“Only about 25% of our youth access tertiary institutions. We must ensure the others receive quality training in their chosen skills,” he emphasised.
