Govt Finally Reopens Schools Week after Closure

The Osun State Government on Monday ordered the reopening of the three tertiary institutions shut on March 18, following a violent protest that ravaged Ijesha land, in Osun East senatorial district.

The institutions affected were: Osun State College of Education, Ilesa; the School of Health Technology, Ilesa; and the Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke.

It was reported that there was break down of law and order in the town following a rift between Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC’s officials and some youth over protracted power outrage in the community.

The government eventually close down the three tertiary institutions when the crisis degenerated in which many people were injured, including journalists who were covering the protest.

A statement made available to newsmen in Osogbo, the Osun State capital by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Adeniyi Adesina, indicated that the decision to reopen the institutions was taken after due consultations with stakeholders, namely: heads of the affected institutions, parents and the leadership of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

According to the statement, “the parties agreed that peace should continue to reign and that the students will henceforth behave in line with the Omoluabi ethos which the State of Osun is noted for.

“The restoration of electricity supply in Ijesaland has commenced. It will soon get to all the communities.

“Governor Oyetola advised the students to desist from taking the law into their hands and to exploit legitimate channels to pursue their grievances.

“He warned that the government would not tolerate any resort to violence in expression of any grievance.

“The schools are to reopen immediately to continue with their normal academic activities.”
