Group demands reinstatement of Ogun teachers sacked over exam question

The ‎Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has called on the Ogun State government to reinstate six civil servants sacked over an examination question the government deemed “inciting”.

The chairman of group, Folarin Olayinka, made the call Monday in Abeokuta. The group appealed to Governor Ibikunle Amosun to intervene urgently.

An English Language examiner, Adegbenro Jolaolu, and five others were sacked over an examination question, which the state government considered embarrassing.

The question deplored the state of education.

CDHR said the question was not aimed at embarrassing the state government or any other state, and that the examiner, in a ‎5-page letter to the governor, had pleaded for mercy.

Mr. Olayinka said the question itself did not contain the name of any state and was certainly not targeted at Ogun State.

CDHR said it sent two FOI letters to the offices of the Head of Service and the chairman, Teaching Service Commission to state the particular Section of the Public Service Rules which the examiner had contravened to warrant his dismissal.

‎While the describing the panel which recommended the sack of the officials as “kangaroo”, CDHR urged the governor to review the outcome of the decision.
