House of Reps advances bill to double UBEC funding to 4%

The House of Representatives has propelled forward a bill aimed at doubling the funding of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) from 2% to 4%.

The bill, which recently cleared its second reading, signifies a pivotal shift in prioritizing educational advancement within the nation.

During a recent oversight function at the cutting-edge Digital Resource Center established by UBEC in Abuja, Honourable Bako Useni, Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education and Services, revealed this significant development.

The Digital Resource Center stands is a modern educational initiative designed to furnish schools nationwide with high-quality digital educational content and empower educators with contemporary training methodologies.

The impetus behind the bill, as articulated by Useni, underscores the pressing need to fortify UBEC’s financial resources to effectively meet its objectives.

Muktar Shagaya’s sponsorship of the amendment bill signifies a collective endeavor to propel UBEC toward greater efficacy in delivering basic education services across Nigeria.

Reflecting on the transformative potential of the proposed amendment, Useni emphasized its capacity to bolster UBEC’s endeavors significantly. He underscored the House’s conviction that augmenting UBEC’s funding would catalyze further advancements in Nigeria’s basic education sector.

Hamid Bobboyi, Executive Secretary of UBEC, lauded the committee’s visit as a testament to UBEC’s commitment to spearheading digital education initiatives. He highlighted the center’s array of state-of-the-art facilities, ranging from digital museums to AI centers, poised to revolutionize pedagogical practices nationwide.

Emphasizing the center’s pivotal role in nurturing a digitally literate workforce, Bobboyi stressed its potential to equip educators with the requisite skills to navigate the digital realm adeptly. Professor Bashir Galandanci, National Coordinator of the Digital Resource Center, echoed these sentiments, portraying the center as a linchpin in UBEC’s digital transformation agenda. Galandanci envisaged the center as a hub for coordinating smart schools nationwide, poised to redefine educational paradigms and empower educators at all levels.
