House of Reps oversees donor funds for advancing science, technology

The House of Representatives has made a resolute commitment to closely scrutinise and ensure the efficient utilisation of funds granted by international partners and donor agencies with the goal of advancing science and technology in Nigeria.

Chairing the House Committee on Science and Technology, Dachung Musa Bagos, reaffirmed this commitment during the inaugural meeting of the committee held in Abuja on Thursday.

The primary focus of the committee is to assess the specific needs for intervention and ensure the proper utilisation of financial support from international partners and donor agencies in the science, technology, and innovation sector.

In his statement, Mr. Bagos emphasised that the committee is dedicated to enhancing the utilisation of grants for the sector’s benefit, which plays a pivotal role in national development.

The committee’s ambitious plans include engaging with relevant stakeholders and conducting rigorous oversight visits to guarantee compliance with the 2023 Appropriation Act.

Bagos also outlined their commitment to working on policies, programmes, and budgets aimed at bolstering the science and technology sector, which is vital for the nation’s growth.

Furthermore, the committee has set its sights on organising study tours and retreats to harness the untapped potential for economic diversification and national development.

Bagos made it clear that discouraging brain drain while promoting youth involvement in the field is a priority.

As part of this initiative, the committee promises to visit educational institutions to foster innovation and identify areas that require legislative interventions.
