ICT critical to achieving quality education – Wikimedia

Enhancing teachers’ capacity with effective digital tools remains imperative in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) of quality education by 2030, the Wikimedia Foundation has said.

Senior Programme Officer, Education and Community Programmes, Wikimedia, Melissa Huertas, who stated this at the graduation ceremony for the reading Wikimedia in the classroom program, in Abuja, commended the project lead Mrs Obiangeli Ezeilo and her team for the successful completion of the program

The training organised by Wikimedia Foundation Team is to develop digital skills among teachers, who will in turn inculcate in their students to access information from reliable sources, improve learning activities and contribute to research work, using the platform.

“If we are to achieve the sustainable development goals, SDGs by 2030, we must see our classes as places students are mentored to be critical thinkers. We hope as participants, you have imbibed the values of lifelong learning to improve the lives of your students.” Huertas stated.

The training which had partners such as the UNESCO, Federal Ministry of Education and other stakeholders, saw a total of 52 teachers completing the training, out of the 70 teachers enrolled for the program.

The project lead, Reading wikipedia in the classroom, Mrs Obiangeli Ezeilo said training was to in the long run foster media and information literacy skills in students for efficient learning outcome.

The representative of UNESCO, Dr Olagunju Idowu praised the organizers and expressed the hope that the project would arouse critical thinking in students to meet the digital demand of the 21st century.

Earlier, the Director Basic Education , Ganiyu represented by Deputy Director Education, Mrs Ogoke Ogazi urged the teachers to build on what they have been taught and do more research to stand among the best in the global community.

Highlights of the program was a presentation by some teachers; using Wikipedia to design a lesson plan, award and certificate presentation to the graduands.
