Indian President Droupadi receives honourary doctorate, encourages youth empowerment

Indian President, Droupadi Murmu, has been bestowed with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Civil Law by the University of Mauritius.

Expressing her gratitude, President Murmu remarked, “I feel especially honoured to receive this recognition. I hope that it will inspire all young people, particularly young women, to discover their unique passion and pursue their dreams.”

President Murmu, who assumed office as the 15th President of India on July 25, 2022, has a distinguished record of public service. Prior to her presidency, she served as the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021.

Throughout her career, President Murmu has been a steadfast advocate for empowering the downtrodden and marginalized sections of society, while also championing the deepening of democratic values.

Her reception of the honourary degree serves as a testament to her dedication and commitment to fostering positive change both within India and on the international stage.

As a role model for youth, particularly young women, President Murmu’s achievements serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration, encouraging the next generation to pursue their aspirations with fervor and determination.

The conferment of the honour not only highlights President Murmu’s personal accomplishments but also underscores the importance of recognizing and celebrating individuals who dedicate their lives to the betterment of society.

The University of Mauritius was formally established by the University of Mauritius Ordinance in December 1965, which integrated the existing School of Agriculture.

Further defining its objectives, powers, functions, and structure, the University of Mauritius Act was passed in 1971.

On 24 March 1972, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, inaugurated the university, with Her Royal Highness the Princess Alexandra, the Honourable Lady Ogilvy serving as its first chancellor.

As the national university of Mauritius, it holds the distinction of being the oldest and largest institution of higher education in terms of student enrollment and academic offerings.

Situated at Réduit, Moka, its main campus serves as the focal point for academic pursuits and intellectual growth.
