In this exclusive interview with Akeem Alao for the Edugist Leaders of Learning series, Oregbesan Julius Gbenga, Principal at Kith and Kin International College, Ikorodu, Lagos, shares his inspiring journey into educational leadership, his values, strategies, and vision for Nigeria’s education system. Speaking with passion and conviction, he reflects on his experiences, challenges, and innovations, offering valuable insights for current and aspiring school leaders.

Could you please tell us about your journey into educational leadership? What inspired you to become a school leader?

My journey into educational leadership is the product of hard work, commitment, integrity, and an enduring passion for the profession. My appointment by the Board of Governors (BOG) was a direct recognition of my dedication to duty and genuine love for my work.

What are the core values that guide your leadership, and how have they shaped your work with staff and students?

The values that guide my leadership include integrity, hard work, excellence, passion and faith in God. My humility and commitment to giving fair hearing to both students and teachers have significantly enhanced my effectiveness as a leader.

What strategies have you found most effective in improving student outcomes and fostering a culture of excellence in your school?

I hold firmly to the belief that every child can learn—there is no such thing as a dullard. To reinforce this, I established the Every Child Reads in Class (ERIC) initiative, which dedicates the first hour of the school day (7:00–8:00 a.m.) to reading. I also administer bi-weekly tests in all subjects and ensure that terminal classes take weekly principal’s tests with standardised questions.

Leadership often comes with challenges. Could you share a particularly tough moment you faced and how you overcame it?

At one point, I was demoted for reasons that were never clearly communicated. I accepted the decision with grace. Less than a year later, the management reinstated me after recognising my intellectual and leadership value, having dismissed my replacement. During that period, I remained loyal, committed, and respectful to authority.

In what ways do you engage teachers in decision-making and professional development to enhance teaching and learning?

As head of the school’s management body, I ensure that decision-making is participatory, not autocratic. I value diverse opinions and operate through a committee system, with each committee led by a staff member. I involve all staff in decisions, recommend them for training, and create opportunities for professional development—many of which are sponsored by the school.

What innovative practices or programs have you implemented in your school, and what impact have they had?

I have initiated several impactful programmes, including Vocational and Entrepreneurial Training for senior students during the summer. Students acquire skills and later showcase them in exhibitions. I also introduced a student–teacher mentoring program and established readers’ clubs to enhance public speaking skills.

How do you support students’ emotional and social development alongside their academic growth?

Recognising that emotional stability is vital for learning, I approve student-led social programs such as Sports Days and Club Days. When students are happy and engaged, they are more willing to follow instructions and excel academically.

What role does the community and parental involvement play in your school’s success?

Parents have played a pivotal role in the school’s success. We actively involve them in events like inter-house sports and cultural activities, often through sponsorships and partnerships. Their consistent support has been invaluable in ensuring the success of our programmes.

What changes would you like to see in Nigeria’s education system, and how are you contributing to that transformation in your own capacity?

I advocate for a stronger reading culture and the development of critical thinking skills. The widespread use of calculators during examinations, even at junior levels, hinders problem-solving ability. While I embrace technological advancement, it should complement—not replace—the pursuit of excellence in teaching and learning.

Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring school leaders who want to make a lasting difference in education?

School leaders must serve as exemplary role models, upholding standards without compromise. They should embody fairness, integrity, and discipline while inspiring both staff and students to strive for excellence.
