Mosun Fajorin, a once vibrant teacher in Abuja, is now battling a debilitating and painful neurological disorder known as dystonia.
With over a decade of teaching experience at renowned schools like Starville School, Doveland International School, Aduvie International School, and Alderwood International School, her life has taken a dramatic and heartbreaking turn.
Now unable to perform basic daily tasks, Mosun is appealing to the public for urgent financial assistance to undergo a $30,000 Deep Brain Stimulation surgery abroad — a procedure that could give her a chance at recovery and restore her dignity.
In this exclusive interview with Akeem Alao, Mosun shares her journey, the pain of living with dystonia, and her desperate call for help.
Could you please introduce yourself and tell us the names of the schools where you taught?
My name is Mosun Fajorin, and I am an educator. Before now, I worked in Abuja and taught at several schools including Starville School, Doveland International School, Aduvie International School, and Alderwood International School.
How did this health condition begin — what were the first symptoms or experiences that led to your diagnosis of dystonia?
It started in 2021, shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic. The first signs were slurred speech and clumsiness in my walking. I went to see a neurologist who, after asking me some questions, said it could be either dystonia or chorea. I later travelled to Ibadan for further investigations and it was confirmed to be dystonia.

What has been the most difficult part of living with this condition, both physically and emotionally?
The excruciating pain that comes with dystonia is the most difficult part. I also find it traumatic not to be able to carry out basic daily routines. Drooling saliva, involuntary punching of myself, breaking my glasses, peeing on myself—these are all extremely humiliating experiences.

Sometimes, when the pain becomes unbearable, I break down crying like a baby. Emotionally, it’s overwhelming.
Have you received any form of support — from your former school, colleagues, or members of the community — since your diagnosis?
Sometime last year, a friend of mine launched a small advocacy campaign to raise funds, but unfortunately, we couldn’t make much progress because we didn’t get the media coverage we needed.
What kind of treatment or care have doctors recommended, and what are the costs involved?
For dystonia, the recommended treatment is Deep Brain Stimulation surgery. Unfortunately, it is not available in Nigeria, so we had to look for options abroad. We contacted a hospital in Turkey, and they gave us a bill of $30,000.
What kind of support do you need most urgently right now — financially, medically, or otherwise?
Right now, I need urgent help to raise $30,000 to undergo the surgery and put an end to this daily nightmare. The trauma I go through every day is horrible. I am appealing to kind-hearted individuals, philanthropists, and organizations that offer medical grants to please come to my aid. Thank you.
