IWD 2024: 8 exceptional female teachers in Nigeria

Female teachers indeed serve as unsung heroes in the educational space, often performing multiple roles beyond their primary duty as educators.

Firstly, they fulfill the role of teachers by imparting knowledge, nurturing critical thinking skills, and facilitating the academic growth of their students. Through their expertise, dedication, and passion for teaching, they create supportive learning environments where students can thrive and reach their full potential.

However, female teachers also often undertake additional responsibilities that go unrecognized. They serve as mentors, counselors, and even surrogate parents for their students, offering guidance, support, and encouragement both inside and outside the classroom. They play a crucial role in addressing the socio-emotional needs of students, providing a listening ear, offering advice, and fostering a sense of belonging and community.

Furthermore, female teachers often juggle their teaching duties with responsibilities at home, balancing their professional careers with caregiving roles for their own families. Despite these challenges, they continue to demonstrate resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to their students’ success.

In essence, female teachers are the backbone of the educational system, embodying resilience, compassion, and dedication as they fulfill multiple roles to support the holistic development of their students. Their contributions extend far beyond the curriculum, shaping the future generation and leaving a lasting impact on society as a whole.
Meanwhile, the designated theme for International Women’s Day in 2024 encompasses two distinct focal points. The first, suggested by the IWD website as the campaign theme, is aptly titled #InspireInclusion. Meanwhile, the official theme endorsed by the United Nations for this year is “Invest in women: Accelerate progress.”

Collaboratively, UN Women and the UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs release an annual update, Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The Gender Snapshot. The latest edition, covering the year 2023, exposes a disconcerting annual shortfall of $360 billion in expenditure dedicated to gender-equality initiatives. This revelation underscores the imperative for heightened commitment and investment in fostering gender equality on a global scale.
