The Jigawa State Government has invested N342 million in establishing a Safe School Rapid Response Coordination Centre, Governor Umar Namadi announced on Thursday at a stakeholders’ forum on the Safe School Initiative (SSI) in Dutse.
The forum, themed “Strengthening Security Resilience and Integration of Host Communities in the Protection of Education,” provided a platform to discuss security challenges facing schools and measures to address them. Namadi explained that the new centre is designed to “serve as a hub to monitor potential emergencies and coordinate swift responses.”
The project includes the renovation and furnishing of facilities, installation of security gadgets, surveillance and ICT equipment, and the provision of two vehicles, four motorcycles, optical night vision devices, GPS units, and walkie-talkies.
Beyond infrastructure, the state government plans to engage over 9,000 youths through a Public-Private Partnership with security agencies to provide security for public institutions, including primary and secondary schools and health facilities. “While primarily intended to enhance security in the benefiting public institutions, this intervention will also help in addressing unemployment among the youths,” Namadi said.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to security, citing it as a key focus under Goal 8 of his 12-Point Agenda. “As mentioned in the agenda document, part of our strategies will include building an inclusive community-led response to security and adopting new technologies,” he stated.
Namadi also emphasized the importance of strengthening local governments, traditional institutions, and other stakeholders to ensure the protection of lives and property. He praised the Nigeria Police Force for its efforts in safeguarding schools and urged collective action in securing educational institutions.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, represented by Assistant Inspector-General of Police Ahmed Ammani, underscored the importance of protecting schools. “We cannot overemphasize the importance of our schools to the overall development of our dear nation. Our schools are not only sanctuaries of knowledge but also a nurturing ground for the future leaders of our country,” he said.
Egbetokun directed Commissioners of Police to intensify stakeholder engagements to ensure school safety. “The security of our schools determines the security of our future and therefore must be protected against all threats,” he added. He further reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to deploying “innovative tactics and technology” while urging community support to safeguard schools from security threats.
