Just In: Federal government launches committee to combat fake degrees amidst growing concerns

The Federal Government, via the Ministry of Education, is establishing an inter-ministerial committee today to address the issue of fake degrees.

The ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Ben Goong, made this known in a notice sent to journalists in Abuja.

Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman will inaugurate the committee, responding to concerns raised by an investigative report on degree mills in Benin Republic and Togo.

Following the report, the government imposed a ban on accrediting degrees from these countries, with plans to extend scrutiny to institutions in Ghana.

Approximately 10,900 Nigerian students in Benin and Togo may be affected by the ban, as disclosed by the National Association of Nigerian Students.

Additionally, 18 out of 58 suspended universities in Nigeria are foreign-owned, according to the National Universities Commission.
