Kano: Gov Reviews Education Policy to Reduce Underage Marriages

In a bid to reduce underage marriages among girls in his state, Kano State governor, Abdulahi Ganduje, has reviewed the state’s education policy.

The governor disclosed this on Sunday at the 2019 Human Rights Summit/Award organised by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The governor who was one of the awardees at the event stated that that the almajiri system of education was now being integrated into the modern system of education.

Kano State Governor

The almajiri system is now being integrated with modern system of education. We are working tirelessly to provide quality education for every girl-child in the state. You know the problem of marrying underage girls, but from our policy now, all our girls have to at least finish secondary education before they are married.

While addressing the audience on the theme: “Adopting Rights Based Approach in the Public Sector Sustainable Development Agenda”, the governor explained that his government introduced free and compulsory basic and secondary education.

Northern Nigeria and Kano State in particular has one of the highest rates of early marriages among girls in the country.
