The Kwara State College of Nursing Sciences, Oke-Ode, in Ifelodun Local Government Area, has successfully held its maiden matriculation ceremony for the first set of National Diploma (ND) students, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s journey.
At the event, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Sa’adatu Modibo Kawu, praised Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his unwavering commitment to advancing education and healthcare in the state.
“The governor’s transformational strides in the education and health sectors, particularly in personnel recruitment and equipping healthcare facilities, have been commendable,” she said.
Addressing the matriculating students, the Commissioner urged them to act with integrity, professionalism, and compassion.
“As future nurses, the lives of others will be in your care. Embrace the core values of this noble profession and be committed to your studies,” she advised.
Hon. Kawu also acknowledged the support of parents, guardians, the host community, and traditional leaders for fostering a peaceful environment that enables the institution to thrive.
In his welcome address, the Provost of the College, Alhaji Abdquadri Lanre, described the occasion as “historic and long overdue.”
He confirmed that the ND Nursing programme has been fully accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
Alhaji Lanre also showered praise on Governor AbdulRazaq, calling him a “silent achiever, humble and visionary leader” who understands that infrastructure must be matched with human resources to deliver quality healthcare.
Guest speaker, Prof. Joel Afolayan of the University of Ilorin’s Department of Nursing, delivered a lecture titled “The Future of Nursing — Emerging Roles and Specializations,” encouraging students to embrace new opportunities in the evolving healthcare landscape.
Also speaking, students’ set coordinator Muhammad Aishat Talatu urged her peers to pursue their academic journey with determination and commitment, guided by the principles of capacity, conformity, and commitment.
The ceremony featured the symbolic capping and stripping of students, a tour of college facilities by the Commissioner, goodwill messages, and drama presentations.
The event was attended by dignitaries from the Ministry of Tertiary Education, academic and non-academic staff, proud parents, and well-wishers.
